Deputy-Director World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia-Pacific Region This lecture is the second one in a cycle on Sustainable Urbanization and Cities, chaired by Pierre Laconte, President of the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP).
About the Presentation
The urban regeneration is one of the primary issues in the decades to come. Its success requires active and balanced partnerships between development and conservation, taking into account the appropriate community consultation. Such partnerships should include an evaluation of the urban change processes going on and their environmental, visual, social and economic impact.
The short term character of political mandates and decision-making contrasts with the long term effects of politically attractive and technically feasible iconic projects on their urban context. A star architect famously said: “I spit on the context”. Such partnerships and their training component are an essential principle for consideration if historic cities are to continue an inclusive economic, social and cultural development.
